Mary Ann Hyde ’49, ’51JC: Why the Hockaday School Is in My Will

Like many Hockaday alumnae, Mary Ann Hyde '49, '51JC, fondly remembers a teacher who impacted her life at Hockaday and beyond. Teaching in the midst of World War II, Hockaday French Teacher Lucette Moulin shared with her students about her life in France, a love for current events and her passion for history.

Mary Ann and her husband, Ed, want to give back to Hockaday and to support future Hockaday teachers. A gift annuity was a perfect fit for them.

"I feel so strongly that excellence in education is paramount," Mary Ann says. "It is so important for Hockaday to be able to attract the caliber of teachers it has had in the past.

An active Hockaday volunteer, Mary Ann has served on the board of trustees and held numerous positions in the Alumnae Association, including President. In returning to Hockaday, Mary Ann had the opportunity to attend some of current French Teacher Bev Cavitt's classes.

"The way that she [Cavitt] is able to motivate students reminds me of the type of motivation that my teachers had with me," Mary Ann says.

Mary Ann and Ed are two of the founding members of the 1913 Society, which recognizes alumnae, parents, and friends of Hockaday who have notified the School that they have made a provision for Hockaday in their will. Thanks to alumnae and friends like the Hyde family, the 1913 Society reached 100 founding members in May 2008.
